Arizona Dude Ranches

Kay El Bar Ranch - Wickenburg, Arizona

Open: October 12th to May 1st

Comfortable and friendly as family, the Kay El Bar Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona, is an authentic western dude ranch in the foothills of Arizona's Bradshaw Mountains, and one of Arizona's first dude ranches.  An hour from Phoenix and four hours from the Grand Canyon, the Kay El Bar has welcomed guests since 1926.   The informal, relaxed atmosphere and small size (maximum capacity 24) create a warm, intimate environment where guests quickly become part of the family. Located on the banks of the usually dry Hassayampa River under towering salt cedar and eucalyptus trees, the Kay El Bar is on the National and Arizona Registers of Historic Places.  In addition to nearly unlimited riding opportunities, nature hikes, and after-dinner western entertainment, the Kay El Bar Ranch can arrange trips to nearby museums, shops and galleries, as well as jeep tours and half-day car trips to Sedona or Jerome (a historic mining town perched on the edge of a mountain).  And each year they offer Women's Week during several select weeks thoughout the season (call us for exact dates and specifics), which is an in-depth experience for women only: horseback instruction, extensive horseback riding, camaraderie, plus cowgirl entertainers and writers from the Wickenburg area.
Although there are no special children's counselors, babysitters or specific programs for kids, children are welcomed at the Kay El Bar Ranch and encouraged to participate in all ranch and horseback riding activities, but must be at least seven years old to ride on the trails.  Younger children will be led around the ranch on horseback.  They provide helmets and recommend that all children wear them.

Extraordinary horseback rides in the mid-Sonoran desert are geared to all skill levels.  Their wranglers will guide you through thousands of acres of desert landscaped with towering saguaro cactus and desert flora where the terrain varies from sandy washes to mountain foothills and towering canyons. Their well-trained horses are suitable for all riding levels, and instruction is an integral part of the horse program.  Ride choices include half-day and all-day rides, a Sunday brunch ride, and cattle sorting ($20 charge).  They also offer informal "Dudeo" (a sort of non-competitive beginner's rodeo) competitions throughout the season.
The historic thick-walled adobe lodge houses eight guest rooms and the ranch living room. Comfortable and charming, each guest room has a private bath, hand-painted Monterey furniture, custom cowboy bedspreads and drapes and a collection of western art work. Choose from king, queen or twin-bedded rooms. (No phones or TV in guest rooms).

In addition, there is The Homestead House, which was built in the early 1900's and served as dude ranch headquarters when the Kay El Bar was a cattle ranch.  Today it retains the original thick-walled adobe ranch style and is a two-bedroom, two-bath cottage.  Spacious and comfortable with its own living room and fireplace, it’s perfect for families, two couples or small groups.  It can sleep up to five adults, and there are day beds for two children.

Or choose from one of the two casitas are tucked away under towering salt cedar and eucalyptus trees. The spacious Casa Grande has a sitting area and fireplace.  It can accommodate one or two children staying with their parents. Casa Monterey has twin beds and great views of the Bradshaw Mountains. Both casas have baths with walk-in showers.

There is also a pool and a hot tub on the property.
“Cooked from scratch” goodness is what Kay El Bar cooking’s all about.   Whether it's breakfast or dinner by a crackling fire in our cozy dining room or a cowboy cookout under starlit skies, mealtime is a special time.  Savor home cooking with garden crisp vegetables and salads, fresh baked breads and desserts, as well as choice meats, fish and poultry grilled over an open mesquite fire.
